The latest images of abandoned and vandalized Orthodox chapels on the northeast Aegean Island of Imvros causes pain and sadness to the faithful.
The island, inhabited by ethnic Greeks since the dawn of history and for millennia a center of Hellenism, was awarded to predominately Muslim Turkey with the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne.

Beginning in the 1960s the Turkish state systematically took measures and imposed restrictions aimed to ethnically cleanse the island, including the creation of open prisons to host some of Turkey’s most vicious criminals.

The Ecumenical Patriarchate’s Metropolitan of Imvros and Tenedos, His Eminence Kirillos, the pastoral father of the remaining Orthodox faithful on the island, had repeatedly called attention to this shameful situation.
