Reactions in Greece continue over an insolent and even blasphemous quip, posted last week in the form of Tweet, by London School of Economics professor Elias Mossialos.
The Tweet is deemed as a direct affront to the Sacrament of the Divine Incarnation of the Son of God.

Even more egregious is the fact that Prof. Mossialos is the Greek government’s representative to international organizations dealing with the coronavirus pandemic.

The Holy Community of Mount Athos issued a strongly worded condemnation on Thursday, joining similar denunciations by the Holy Synod of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece, individual hierarchs and theology associations.

Nevertheless, only tepid criticism has been voiced so far by the country’s political world. Even New Democracy (ND) party deputy Maximos Harakopoulos, who is the Secretary General of the Inter-parliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy, merely referred to a “…simple unfortunate statement”.

At the same time, the issue landed on the European Parliament floor, as Greek Euro-Deputy Stelios Kouloglou, who is elected with the radical leftist SYRIZA party, referred to the impudent statement as a “…harmless satirical comment”.

The Greek MEP’s glossing over of Mossialos’ offensive Tweet was reported in an article by journalist Maria Giachnaki, which was circulated on Greek-language mass media today.
