The Patriarch of All Romania, His Beatitude Daniel, was honored with a commemorative medal this week by the Romanian government for the Church’s participation in the promotion of national memory and values.
The medal was bestowed on His Beatitude by presidential adviser Sergiu Nistor.

Immediately afterwards, the Romanian Patriarch expressed his appreciation for recognition of the Church’s contribution, over the centuries, to the cultivation of a Romanian identity and unity, adding that the honor and recognition by the Romanian president for the Orthodox Church comes on the feast day of Andrew the First-Called Apostle, who is the patron saint of Romania.

Dec. 1 is also commemorated as the day in 1918 when Transylvania was united with the Kingdom of Romania.
