Metropolitan of Mantinia and Kynouria urges immediate action to restore historic St. Nicholas Kaltezon Monastery
The historic St. Nicholas Kaltezon Monastery in the south-central Peloponnese continues to face the ravages of time, with a portion of its western side collapsing earlier this month, as restoration and repairs are now urgently needed.
The 17th century monastery, in mountainous Arcadia prefecture, hosted the first national assembly of Greek revolutionaries (the Peloponnesian Senate) during the War of Independence from dour Ottoman rule. As circumstance would have it, 2021 marks the bicentennial of the beginning of the Greek Revolution in 1821.
The Metropolitan of Mantinia and Kynouria, His Eminence Alexandros, immediately toured the monastery after the latest report of damages.
“…I am, unfortunately, becoming a herald of ominous news, but the desperation and anguish I feel now overcome me, as I see the historic national monument of the Monastery of Kaltezon collapsing,” His Eminence wrote in a letter directed to the regional governor in the eastern Peloponnese.”
