Metropolitan of Kisamos & Selino: Solutions now necessary to solve Greece’s demographic problem
Τhe Church of Crete’s Metropolitan of Kisamos and Selino, His Eminence Amphilochios, this week again spoke on the demographic crisis faced by Greece, and on the occasion of a new study by the Athens-based DiaNEOsis research firm.
According to a best-case scenario cited in the study, by 2050 Greece’s population will stand at 10 million. However, under the worst-case scenario, the population will be reduced to 8.3 million residents, from the roughly 11 million people that reside in the country today.
Regardless, the study points to the first reduction in Greece’s population after WWII.
In a statement, His Eminence noted that “…theoretically and practically, solutions are now necessary for this problem … in other words, policies are necessary to provide incentives and opportunities to create new families who want to have children. The birth of a child is a source and reason for joy, not stress and anxiety over covering children’s needs.”
