Major wildfires erupt across Greece

Some 80 residences were seriously damaged by a massive wildfire centered at the Varybobi township, just north of the greater Athens area, while a total 41 new wildfires were recorded throughout Greece since Tuesday evening, civil protection authorities announced during an emergency briefing on Wednesday morning.
Regarding the situation in Varybobi, the relevant deputy minister referred to a much improved situation, while fire fighting forces continue to operate and patrol in the area. More than 1,200 hectares of forest and brushland were burned at Varybobi.

Other major wildfires were reported in the southern Peloponnese, on the Dodecanese islands of Kos and Rhodes, as well as near the coastal town of Limni in north-central part of large Evia island.

In terms of the latter, the Abbot of the historic St. David the Elder Monastery, located within the densely forested Rovies site, in said smoke and flames were as near as 1,500 meters from the monastery.
