A litany of the Holy Relics of the Great Martyr Demetrius, along with the Holy Icon of the Panaghia Portaitissa, was conducted on Monday, in the presence of worshippers, with splendorous Byzantine rite in the northern city of Thessaloniki.
Monday marks the Eve of the Feast Day of the Great Martyr, who is the patron saint of Thessaloniki.
The Metropolitan of Thessaloniki, His Eminence Anthimos, arrived at the dedicated Cathedral of St. Demetrius in the morning amid the joyous ringing of Church bells.
A Great Vespers and Vigil followed in the afternoon and evening, while a Doxology service, officiated by His Eminence Anthimos, will take place on Tuesday, the great feast day, which coincides with the anniversary of the city’s liberation from Ottoman rule by the Greek army in 1912.
Among the dignitaries on hand for the three-day celebrations and events in Thessaloniki, culminating with the annual Oct. 28 military parade through the city’s center to commemorate Greece’s entry into WWII on the side of the Allies, will be President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou and Republic of Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades.
