Two days of events concluded over the weekend at the Ayia Napa harbor on the east Mediterranean island of Cyprus, commemorating this year’s bicentennial of the beginning of the Greek War of Independence.

The events were held under the auspices of the president of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades.

On Sunday, Anastasiades unveiled a monument commemorating the 1826 Battle of Ayia Napa, the only Greek revolution clash to have taken place on Cypriot soil.

The monument commemorates the Greek Revolution and a battle between roughly 200 Greek revolutionaries, who had anchored off southeast Cyprus in search of provisions, and Ottoman soldiers guarding the area. The battle took place on March 17, 1826, and resulted in a victory for the Greek revolutionaries.
