Greek Orthodox Community of St George Brisbane Cultural Committee celebrates OHI Day
The Greek Orthodox Community of St George Brisbane Cultural Committee invites you to commemorate Greece’s contribution in the Second World War, ahead of OHi Day on 28 October.
With the auspices of AHEPA QLD and the Peter Spathis Foundation Brisbane’s GOC will celebrate at the Greek Club in South Brisbane at 7.30pm.
The night will include speeches and special performances.
The presentation will be by Dr Martyn Brown, a History Consultant with the Australian Department of Veteran’s Affairs and an Honorary Research Fellow with the School of Historical and Philosophic Inquiry at the University of Queensland. Mr Brown is also a long-time good friend of the Greek Community of Brisbane.
The lecture is titled “Greeks in the Second World War” and will look at the contribution and sacrifice of the Greek people in defeating Nazi Germany, fascist Italy and Japan presenting scanned images, sound and video clips focusing on the Greek connection between Australia and New Zealand.
The Hellenic Dancers’ Academy will present a selection of dances from the Cylades Islands and the students from the Greek Orthodox Community of St George Greek Afternoon Ethnic School will perform the national anthems of Australia and Greece.
This will be an admission-free event, however, due to COVID-19, bookings are essential.
Coffee, tea and sweets to be served at the conclusion of the event.
There will also be a special pre-lecture dinner at Nostimo restaurant including a $30 banquet meal accompanied with house wine, beer or a soft drink.
