Great feast day of Nicholas the Wonderworker, Archbishop of Myra, celebrated throughout Orthodox world
This saint lived during the reign of St. Constantine the Great, and reposed in 330. He is the patron of all travelers, and of sea-farers, in particular. St. Nicholas is one of the best known and best loved saints of Christianity.
Exclusive photographic material has been posted today by the Orthodoxia news agency from the Vespers and Divine Liturgy services held at the ancient site of Myra, in extreme southwest Asia Minor.
The feast day was celebrated in solemn and splendorous manner throughout the Orthodox world.
The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, His All Holiness Bartholomew I, commemorated the feast day of Nicholas the Wonderworker by officiating at a Divine Liturgy at the celebrating cathedral in the Civali district, which lies in the Phanar-Golden Horn parish of Constantinople.
Additionally, a con-celebratory Vespers at the Myra site, and at a chapel dedicated to the saint, was officiated by the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s Bishop of Myron and Lycia, His Eminence Chrysostomos, and co-officiated by other hierarchs and Elders of the Holy & Great Monastery of Vatopedi of Mount Athos.
In another corner of the world, a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy was celebrated at the Church of St. Nicholas in Southampton on Sunday, with the Archbishop of Thyateira and Great Britain, His Eminence Nikitas, officiating.
In northern Greece, the feast day of St. Nicholas of Myra was celebrated at the monastic complex of Porto Lagos, which is dedicated to the saint. The monastery is a glebe, or estate, of the Holy and Great Monastery of Vatopedi.
A Hierarchical Divine Liturgy was officiated by the Metropolitan of Xanthi, His Eminence Panteleimon, and co-officiated by Vatopedi fathers.
In a sermon, His Eminence referred to the life and works of Nicholas the Wonder-worker, while calling on the faithful to listen to the experts during the difficult time faced by humanity amid the ongoing pandemic.
