Nearly half a century after the barbarous 1974 Turkish invasion, the Republic of Cyprus on Tuesday again commemorated all those who lost their lives, and those who are still missing, during the annual memorial service at the Makedonitissa Tomb, at Nicosia’s military cemetery.
The memorial service was attended by the President of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, and top ministers, while Greece’s Defense Minister, Nikos Panagiotopoulos, was also on hand, along with civil and military leaders.
In a Twitter post, President Anastasiades reminded that Turkey`s invasion of Cyprus in July 1974 continues to be a provocation for the entire international community, adding that “..we continue our struggle, focused on the international law.”
Halfway around the world, and in a related development, the Archbishop of Australia, His Eminence Makarios, issued his message on the occasion of the dour 47th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.
In his message, the Archbishop referred to “…the heavy burden of the blatant injustice that our Cypriot brothers carry in their souls, and all the Greek community, for those gloomy days of July and August in 1974.”
