Feast day of Demetrius, the Great Martyr of Thessaloniki; 3 days of events and commemorations in northern Greece metropolis

The Church today venerates Demetrius the Myrrh-streamer & Great Martyr of Thessaloniki.
The occasion of the great feast day for our Church was celebrated in a splendorous manner today, Oct. 26, in the northern Greece metropolis of Thessaloniki, where Demetrius is the patron saint.

The date entails an added significance for the ancient city, as it marks the anniversary of its liberation by the Greek army in 1912 and an end to centuries of dour Ottoman rule.

Demetrius the Great Martyr is particularly venerated and honored throughout southeast Europe.

An Archieratical con-celebratory service was held on Tuesday morning at the dedicated cathedral of St. Demetrius in the center of Thessaloniki, officiated by the Metropolitan of Kassandria, His Eminence Nikodimos, and co-officiated by several other Metropolitans and hierarchs, and in the presence of the Metropolitan of Thessaloniki, His Eminence Anthimos.

A doxology memorial service followed to commemorate the anniversary of the city’s liberation, attended by President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou and Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades, along with numerous other office-holders and representatives of the military.

On a somber note, the annual pupils’ parade in Thessaloniki on Oct. 27 has been cancelled, as tomorrow, Wednesday, has been declared a day of national mourning, due to the passing on Monday of Greek political party leader Fofi Gennimata.

The latter died on Monday at the age of 56 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
