Elder Ephraim’s condition stable, but critical over past few hours
Attending physicians have been able to stabilize the condition of the Elder Archimandrite Ephraim with stepped up medication, after a sudden deterioration in his health in the early morning hours of Wednesday.
The beloved Elder remains in an intensive care unit (ICU) at the public Evangelismos Hospital in central Athens for a 14th straight day.
The medical staff treating the Elder said his system was responding to the latest medications, allowing attending physicians to determine the next treatment steps.
The next few days are deemed as extremely crucial for determining the Elder’s health, amid the hope that no further complications will arise, ones that are now the result of hospital-acquired infections. The Elder Ephraim, the Abbot of the Holy & Great Monastery of Vatopedi, was admitted to Evangelismos on May 28 for treatment in a Covid-19 ward. His transfer to an enhanced care unit was deemed necessary on May 30.
Less than a week later, on June 4, physicians determined that the Elder should be intubated, due to complications from the underlying conditions.
Expressions of love have poured in from Orthodox nations around the world, with the Primates of the Orthodox Churches, the clergy, the pious faithful and office-holders extending their compassion and prayers for the Elder Ephraim and their support to the Vatopedi brotherhood in this time of tribulation.
