Defrocked priest behind horrendous acid attack at synodal tribunal charged with felony aggravated assault

A 37-year-old defrocked priest who carried out a horrendous and unprecedented acid attack on Wednesday afternoon, during a hearing of an appellate level synodal, or ecclesiastical, tribunal convened at the Petraki Monastery in central Athens, was charged on Friday with several felony counts of aggravated assault.
He remained in custody this week, remanded to a west Athens psychiatric ward.

The former priest Archimandrite from northern Greece threw acid contained in two bottles at seven Metropolitans, the tribunal’s secretary, a pair of attorneys and a police officer attempting to subdue him.

All of those injured have been released, as of Friday, from hospitals.
