Concerns over possible Covid-related restrictions ahead of three-day celebrations in Thessaloniki late next month

The Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece, Church hierarchs and the faithful are awaiting information on what, if any, restrictions will be in place at the end of October in the northern Greece city of Thessaloniki
A three-day period of events, commemorations and celebrations annually take place in the metropolis between Oct. 26 and Oct. 28, beginning with the feast day of Holy Great-Martyr Demetrius, the patron saint of Thessaloniki, which coincides with the anniversary of the city’s liberation from Ottoman in 1913, and followed by the customary military parade on Oct. 28 to mark Greece’s entry into World War II.

Concerns over possible restrictions on Church-going, and even the cancellation of commemorative events, came in the wake of a decision by public health authorities to again place the greater Thessaloniki area in a high Covid-19 concentration level.
