The Church of Crete’s Metropolis of Petra and Heronissou over the weekend organized a series of events focusing on the first governor of the modern Greek state, Ioannis Kapodistrias, on the occasion of this year’s bicentennial of the beginning of the Greek War of Independence.
A con-celebratory Divine Liturgy was held on Saturday at the Cathedral of the Great Panaghia, in the town of Neapolis, with His Eminence Metropolitan Gerassimos officiating. Before the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, a memorial service was held for the repose of the soul of Ioannis Kapodistrias, as this month marks the 190th anniversary of his assassination in Nafplion.
