The Church today commemorates the Placing of the Honorable Sash, or Cincture, of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Virgin May.
Although historical accounts differ somewhat, the Deposition that is celebrated today most likely took place during the reign of the Emperor Arcadius, in the late fourth and early fifth centuries, when the precious Cincture was brought from Cappadocia to Constantinople, and placed in the Church of the Theotokos in the Chalcopratia section of the imperial city.
