The Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, His Beatitude Ieronymos, on Sunday was present at the Monastery of St. Nicholas Kaltezon, in the mountainous portion of Arcadia prefecture, in the central Peloponnese, for commemorative events on the occasion of the bicentennial of the start of the Greek War of Independence.

The Holy Eucharist was conducted in the morning by the Metropolitan of Mantinia and Kynouria, His Eminence Alexandros, followed by a Doxology memorial service in the afternoon officiated by the Archbishop for the liberation struggle fighters who participated in the Peloponnesian senate, which was convened at the monastery.

In a brief address, His Beatitude noted that “…Europeans’ ideas helped us acquire freedom, and we do not disagree that these ideas helped, but when this event took place here, at this spot, the idea of the Enlightenment was not present among the Greeks. When the Enlightenment dominated in the West, we here had neo-martyrs; we had those who swore that the liberation struggle would be for Christ’s Faith and for the motherland.”
