Milestone events for Orthodoxy in 2021

Several important developments affected Orthodoxy over the past year.
The continued and ominous presence of the pandemic wasn’t enough to dampen the significant milestones and events of the Orthodox world.

For instance, the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece over the past year took a very active role in organizing and participating in commemorative events to mark the bicentennial of the beginning of the Greek of Independence in 1821. Several individual Metropolises around the east Mediterranean country also organized and hosted related events, commemorations and celebrations, often focusing on the role of the Orthodox Church in preserving Hellenism during the dour four centuries of Ottoman Muslim rule and its contributions to the Greek Revolution.

For the venerable Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, 2021 marked the 30-year anniversary of the enthronement of His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I.

The Primate of the Mother Church, on the occasion of this anniversary, conducted two successful pastoral visits, one to the eastern United States and the other to Greece, both in the latter part of the year.

The long-awaited official dedication of the nearly-completed St. Nicholas National Shrine at “Ground Zero” in Manhattan was also conducted amid a solemn ceremony in the presence of the Ecumenical Patriarch, on the 20-year anniversary of the abominable terrorist attack.

Earlier in the year, and specifically in February, the Serbian Orthodox Church’s Metropolitan of Zagreb & Ljubljana, Porfirije, was elected as His Holiness, the 46rd Patriarch of the Church of Serbia, succeeding reposed Patriarch Irinej.
