Hios, Iraklio commemorates feast day of patron saint
The feast day of Sts. Menas, Victor and Vincent was also commemorated in a splendorous manner on the eastern Aegean Island of Hios. Further to the south, Menas of Egypt is the patron saint and protector of the city of Irakleio, on Crete.
Nov. 11 is of added significance for Hios, as it’s also the anniversary of the isle’s liberation from centuries of Ottoman rule.
A con-celebratory Vespers was officiated by the Metropolitan of Thessaliotidos Timotheos at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Sts. Victor and Vincent in the capital of the island, and co-officiated by the Metropolitan of Kifissia, Maroussi and Oropos, His Eminence Kirillos and the Metropolitan of Hios, Psara and Oinousses, His Eminence Markos.
The civil governor of Mount Athos, Athanasios Martinos, also attended the service.
A litany procession of the saints’ icons followed, solemnly carried by cadets of the merchant marine academy on the isle of Oinousses.
In Irakleio, an archieratical service at the celebrating Metropolitan Cathedral was officiated by the Metropolitan of Rethymno and Avlopotamos, His Eminence Evgenios.
