Metropolitan Joanikije bemoans continuing animosity towards Church by Montenegro president

The Metropolitan-Bishop of Montenegro and the Littoral, His Eminence Joanikije, this week expressed his deep disappointment over the recent insolent behavior by Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic against the Orthodox Church, referring to treatment that “…communist authorities exhibited towards the Serbian Orthodox Church after WWII, especially in Montenegro.”

His Eminence added that “…the Metropolitanate, its bishops, clergy, and the faithful have gone through sacrifice and suffering. We thought those times were behind us…In the heart of Europe, in the 21st century, it happens that a secular, democratic country – as Montenegro should be – the Church is again exposed to a readiness of certain people to treat its shrines in a Bolshevik manner.”
