Two 18th century church doors, considered cultural treasures, returned to Cyprus from Japan; artifacts looted from Turkish-occupied areas

Two ornate 18th century doors, looted from a church in Cyprus in the 1970s, were finally repatriated from Japan to the east Mediterranean island republic this week.
The pair of doors are dated 1778 and adorned the Church of St. Anastasios in Cyprus.

The Church of St. Anastasios was looted in 1974 during the invasion of Cyprus by Turkey. The occupation has witnessed the looting of numerous antiquities and religious items from various churches in the Turkish occupied area, often winding up on the black market.
