Tributes from Orthodox hierarchs for late Mikis Theodorakis
In a related development, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, His All Holiness Bartholomew I, issued a statement on Thursday over the passing of renowned Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis.
His All Holiness noted that “…Mikis Theodorakis was a leading composer, a unique creator, a great man. He had the unique ability to determine his music in a unique way, masterfully incorporating the dynamism of the social message of each era.”
Similar messages were also issued by several Orthodox hierarchs around the world.
In a message, His Eminence Makarios, the Archbishop of Australia, stressed that the work of Theodorakis will continue to be embraced by the Greek-Australian community, adding “…With his melodies he touched the souls of all Greeks and all people around the world. With his struggles for democratic and patriotic ideals, he inspired and became a timeless model for young people of many generations.”
The Patriarch of Serbia, His Holiness Porfirije, accompanied his condolences on social media with a video of a concert and address by Theodorakis in Athens’ main Syntagma square in 1999, during an event to express solidarity to the Serbian people, which were under attack at the time.
Similar statements and condolences were issued by the Archbishop of Tirana, Durres and All Albania, His Beatitude Anastasios, as well as the Moscow Patriarchate’s Metropolitan of Volokolamsk, His Eminence Hilarion.
