Archbishop Ieronymos: Great national problem facing Greece is demographic crisis

The Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, His Beatitude Ieronymos, on Thursday again spoke over what he called the greatest national problem facing the country, namely, a low birth rate combined with one of the oldest populations in Europe.

His Beatitude spoke during an event at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation

The Archbishop warned that the demographic crisis in Greece leads to a further secularization of society, undermines the traditional institutions of marriage and family and aggravates professional and economic conditions.

He stressed that the state, the Church and the society of citizens must create the necessary structures in order to avoid the termination of pregnancies and to support mothers and children.

On her part, the president of the republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, who also addressed the event, warned that deaths now outnumber births in the country, underlining that “…since the beginning of the economic crisis, many Greeks, especially young adults, left the country, seeking a better fate abroad… the roots of the nation are drying out.”
