5th Thursday of Great Lent – Great Canon of St. Andrew, Archbishop of Crete
Today is the 5th Thursday of Lent, where the Great Canon of St. Andrew, Archbishop of Crete, also known as the Canon of Repentance, is sung at the Matins service.
The penitential Great Canon broaches the entire history of the Holy Scriptures, both Old and New, artistically fitted together into one sacred song. This divine Father incites every soul to imitate the good and to flee from evil, and to return to God by means of repentance.
The Church on Thursday also venerates the memory of Crescens the Martyr.
